We maintain your heat pump. We do not sell or install new units.

That means our only interest is in how well your existing system performs. No upsell, no conflict of interest, no reason to recommend anything other than what your system actually needs.

Is this the right service for your situation?

Your system is not heating or cooling the way it used to. Rooms are taking longer to reach temperature, or one part of the house is noticeably less comfortable than it used to be. That is usually the result of buildup inside the unit restricting its ability to do its job. A Restore removes that buildup and returns the system to the performance it was designed to deliver.

You have noticed a musty smell when the heat pump runs. That smell comes from mould and bacteria that have accumulated inside the unit in the parts a filter clean does not reach. A Restore treats the source directly, not the symptom.

Your system has been running for years without a professional service. Buildup inside the unit creates wear that develops slowly and without any obvious warning signs. A Restore addresses the conditions that lead to early failures before they become repair bills.

What happens when we service your heat pump.

When a heat pump starts struggling to heat or cool a room as well as it used to, or the air coming through carries a smell, the cause is almost always the same. Mould and dust have built up inside the unit in the parts a filter rinse never reaches. Here is what we do about it.

Assess

Before any cleaning begins your technician photographs the unit inside and out and records what they find. We measure the temperature of the air going in and the air coming out. This gives us a baseline to measure the improvement against. You see the starting point before we touch anything

Treat

The filter:
We remove it, wash it with an antimicrobial solution, and dry it before refitting. A clean filter means the system is not pushing air through a layer of accumulated dust.

Inside the unit:
Behind the filter is where most of the buildup lives. This is the part most owners never see and most operators never reach. We clean the surface the air passes through and the fan that moves it. The fan accumulates mould in a ring on its blades over time. Left long enough this causes the unit to vibrate and work harder than it should. We remove it.

The drain:
In cooling mode the unit produces water that needs to drain out of your home. Sludge from the internal buildup drips into this drain over time and blocks it. We flush it clear and drop in a slow-release tablet that inhibits future blockages.

The casing and remote:
We wipe down and sanitise the outside of the unit and the remote control.

The outdoor compressor:
We clear debris from around it and wash it down. Keeping it clear keeps the whole system running efficiently.

Floor consoles — two differences: Because floor consoles sit at ground level they accumulate pet hair and carpet fibres that wall units do not face. We remove the front panel to access and clean these specifically. Floor consoles also have temperature sensors at ground level that read the room. Dust on these causes the unit to misread the room and run longer than it needs to. We clean them.

Monitor

Once the service is complete we measure the temperature of the air going in and the air coming out again. The difference between the before and after reading is recorded in your written condition report along with photographs of every component we serviced. Annual Care Plan customers leave with their next visit already booked. We track your system's condition over time and catch problems before they become failures.

What if we find something?

Every finding from your visit appears in your condition report with a clear action against it. Some things are taken care of on the day as part of the standard service. Some need a return visit to address properly. We will offer to book that before we leave. Some are outside our scope entirely. We document those with photographs so you have everything you need to take to a qualified specialist. And some are worth watching but not urgent. We note those and recheck them at your next visit.

What You Receive After Every Service.

Every Restore produces a written condition report. This is not a summary. It is a documented record of the system's state before treatment, the work performed, and the measured result. It is the evidence that the service was done and done properly.

Before-and-after photographs of serviced components

Written notes on every significant finding and what was done about it

Clear guidance on anything that needs a follow-up visit

Documentation of any issues outside MiHT's scope for your installer

A record of system condition at the time of service - useful for warranty purposes, insurance, or property records

How Would You Like Us to Look After Your System?

If your system has never been professionally serviced, start with a One-Off Restore. If you want your system looked after year after year without having to think about it, an ongoing care plan is the better option. Here is how to choose

Annual Care Plan: Scheduled once per year. Recommended for most heat pumps or floor consoles in year-round use, and for any system installed in a coastal or high-use environment.

Biennial Care Plan: Professional Restore every two years for systems in lighter or seasonal use. Same process and condition report as the Annual Care Plan. Suited to holiday homes, or systems used primarily in one season.

One-Off Restore: The right starting point if your system has never been professionally serviced or you want to know exactly what condition it is in. From $249 inc gst. Includes the full service and a written condition report. No ongoing commitment required.

Pricing:
Wall or floor mounted heat pump Restore: $249 inc GST.

A wall mounted heat pump costs between $1,500 and $4,000 to supply and install in Auckland. The outdoor compressor unit, if it needs replacing due to a failed compressor, can cost $1,000 to $3,000. A Restore is a fraction of those figures.

Not sure which system you have?

If you have two or more indoor units running from a single outdoor unit, that is a multi-split system. See multi-split heat pump maintenance →

If your heating and cooling comes through ceiling vents from a unit hidden in the ceiling cavity, that is a ducted system. See ducted heat pump maintenance →

FAQs

How often should I service my heat pump?

Annual professional servicing is the standard for wall and floor mounted heat pumps in regular year-round use. Systems in homes with pets, high dust levels, or occupants with respiratory sensitivities benefit from a service every six to twelve months. Cleaning the filter yourself every four to six weeks is recommended between professional services. A professional Restore reaches the components inside the unit that a filter clean does not: the internal fan, the coil, the drain, and the outdoor unit. If you are unsure how often your system needs attention, the Home Energy Health Assessment gives you a personalised recommendation based on your own situation.

What is the difference between cleaning the filter and getting a professional service?

Filter cleaning removes surface dust from the panel you can access yourself. A professional Restore covers the components behind and beneath the filter where mould, dust, and grime accumulate over time. These are the parts that affect how efficiently the system heats and cools, and what the air carries when it circulates through your home. A Restore also includes a temperature measurement before and after the service, so there is a recorded result showing the improvement.

My heat pump smells musty. Does it need a service?

A musty smell is almost always a sign of mould and bacteria that have built up inside the unit in the warm, moist environment behind the filter. The system continues to circulate air, and that air passes through what has accumulated inside. Running the unit on dry mode or fan-only can reduce the smell temporarily but does not address the source. A Restore treats the internal components directly and includes a sanitising treatment. If the smell has been present for more than a few weeks, book a Restore.

Does MiHT service all heat pump brands?

MiHT services all major heat pump brands in New Zealand, including Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Daikin, LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Hitachi, and others. The Restore process is the same regardless of manufacturer. MiHT does not install or repair, so there is no brand affiliation and no incentive to recommend one make over another. If you are unsure whether your unit is covered, contact us before booking and we will confirm.

I live near the coast. Does that affect my heat pump?

Coastal properties within approximately five kilometres of the sea face an additional maintenance challenge. Salt carried in the air settles on the outdoor unit over time and gradually degrades the external components. This reduces the unit's ability to exchange heat efficiently. Coastal units benefit from more frequent servicing and may require a protective treatment. Note your property's proximity to the coast when booking and the technician will assess the outdoor unit accordingly.

What does the condition report include?

The report covers the temperature reading of the air going in and coming out before and after the service, the condition of each component before treatment, what was found, what was done about it, and what needs attention in future. Before and after photographs are included for every component serviced. The report is issued after the visit and serves as the permanent service record for your system. Annual Care Plan customers also receive their Home Energy Rating.

Will a service affect my heat pump warranty?

Professional maintenance by a qualified technician supports your warranty rather than affecting it. Most manufacturers require evidence of regular maintenance, and a documented service record is more likely to support a warranty claim than the absence of one. The condition report produced at every MiHT Restore provides written evidence that the system has been professionally maintained. For specific warranty questions, refer to your unit's documentation or contact the manufacturer directly.

How do I book a heat pump service?

Book online 24 hours a day. Select your service type, choose a time that suits you, and receive instant confirmation. On the day of your service you will receive live GPS tracking of your technician. A full Restore takes approximately one and a half hours.
