We saw this pattern hundreds of times. Systems failing years before they should. Heat pumps working twice as hard against clogged coils. Ventilation ducts harbouring mould and recirculating it through every room in the house. Solar panels generating 20% less power than they should because nobody had ever cleaned them.
Homeowners weren't negligent. They just weren't told. Nobody ever mentioned that these systems need professional care.
Two Ways the Industry Fails Homeowners
The first failure: abandonment. Most installers disappear after the job is done. No ongoing relationship. No maintenance guidance. The homeowner is on their own.
The second failure: exploitation. Some of the largest companies in the industry do stay in contact — but only to sell. Call centres contact homeowners every year, warning that skipping their annual filter service will void their warranty. A technician arrives, swaps a filter, charges several hundred dollars, and leaves, without performing any meaningful maintenance on the coils, the drain, the ductwork, or the outdoor unit. The homeowner thinks they're doing the right thing. They're paying for a transaction, not care.
Either way, nobody is genuinely looking after these systems.
